Biography


Dr. Hadi Qazwini is a scholar, educator, mentor, and community leader with two decades of expertise in Islamic studies, interreligious leadership, and higher education administration. He currently serves as a Chaplain at The Claremont Colleges, where he provides religious literacy, spiritual guidance, cultural competency training, and community empowerment services to a diverse population of students, faculty, and staff. His work spans academia, public scholarship, and community service, bridging the gap between intellectual discourse and lived experience.

Raised in Southern California in an Iraqi American immigrant family, Dr. Qazwini comes from a distinguished lineage of American Muslim scholars known for their legacy of learning and community service. His upbringing and personal experiences inspired his pursuit of advanced religious studies and his commitment to education and community engagement.

Dr. Qazwini’s academic journey includes advanced Islamic studies at the Seminary of Qum, a B.A. in Sociology from the University of California, Irvine, an M.A. in Islamic Studies and Leadership from Claremont School of Theology and Bayan Islamic Graduate School, and a Ph.D. in Religion with a concentration in Global Islam from the University of Southern California. His doctoral research, "The Islamic Debate on Juristic In/fallibility (al-takhṭiʾa wa al-taṣwīb) and the Construction of Competing Orthodoxies, 10th–11th Centuries C.E.", examines the evolution of legal thought and sectarian identities in early Islamic history.

With extensive experience in higher education as a scholar, educator, and administrator, Dr. Qazwini has taught at institutions such as the University of Southern California, Whittier College, Bayan Islamic Graduate School, and the Ahlulbayt Islamic Seminary of California. His courses cover Islamic intellectual history, comparative theology and law, and interreligious studies. His research, published in esteemed academic venues—including Islamic Studies, The Encyclopaedia of Islam Three, Shii Studies Review, and Edinburgh University Press—explores these and other critical topics. In addition to teaching and scholarship, he has held leadership roles in academic administration at both liberal arts and research institutions, contributing to curriculum development, faculty and student mentorship, and institutional governance.

Beyond academia, Dr. Qazwini is deeply engaged in community service, offering public speaking, personalized instruction, mentorship for young adults and professionals, and life-cycle services. He has served on numerous advisory boards and committees and is actively involved with nonprofit organizations dedicated to higher education, community empowerment, and humanitarian relief.

Dr. Qazwini has traveled extensively and has engaged with communities worldwide. He currently resides in Southern California with his wife and their four children, continuing his lifelong mission of education, scholarship, and service.
